1961 Game 131: New York Yankees (87-44) @ Minnesota Twins (56-74)

Thursday August 31, 1961

Twins 5, Yankees 4

While the Minnesota Twins’ inagural season has been a bit of a disappointment on the field, Calvin Griffith must have been all smiles after taking two of three from the first-place Yankees in a midweek, late season series.

Most importantly to Griffith, perhaps, was the gate. The previous two game represented the top two attendances of the year at Metropolitan Stadium (41,357 on Wednesday, 40, 118 on Tuesday). At Thursday’s series finale, the number was 33,709, the sixth largest crowd of the season at the Met.

For the rest of the organization, however, the news of the series was the improbable series win. The Twins capped it off in a 5-4 win that had a little bit of everything, including yet another Mickey Mantle home run.

The Twins scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning, an inning capped off by a two-run home run hit by Jim Lemon (13). As it turned out, five runs would be enough.

Mantle’s blast came shortly after, a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was his 48th of the year, he remains three behind teammate Roger Maris, who went 0-for-4 with a walk.

The Yankees hit three home runs in the game, accounting for all four of their runs.

Jack Kralick pitched the complete game. Though he allowed the four runs, he struck out eight to earn his 12th win of the season.
