1961 Games 107 & 108: Minnesota Twins (46-60) @ New York Yankees (69-37)

Sunday August 6, 1961

Yankees 7, Twins 6 – 15 innings
Yankees 3, Twins 2

Pedro Ramos, it seems, must be the ideal pitcher to face from a Yankee perspective. Despite the fact that he handled New York on Opening Day, the bombers are hitting home runs at a record pace while Ramos is allowing home runs at a record pace. A match made in heaven for game one of the Sunday twinbill between the Twins and the Yankees.

It started predictably: with a Mickey Mantle home run (41) in the bottom of the first inning to put the home team ahead by a score of 2-0. Two innings later, Mantle hit his second of the game to run his season total to 42.

The Twins’ offense, however, wasn’t about to roll over for the first place Yankees. A Ted Lepcio triple knocked in two runs and he later scored as part of a three-run Twins’ second. In the third, both Bob Allison (24) and Zoilo Versalles (4) hit solo home runs to give the Twins a 5-2 lead (later cut to 5-3 by Mantle’s second homer).

The Yankees put together a two-run fifth without the help of the longball. The score remained tied at five into extra innings. The two teams exchanged solo home runs in the 10th. Bill Tuttle hit his second of the season for the Twins and Johnny Blanchard answered with his 15th.

Into the bottom of the 15th inning, with the score still tied the first two Yankees reached on singles. After they advanced on a fly ball and Mickey Mantle was walked, the Twins were unable to turn the double play on Yogi Berra’s ground out and the game finally came to an end.

Game two went to the last at-bat as well, and once again it was a Yankee walk-off, this time on Clete Boyer’s RBI single off of Al Schroll. Mantle hit his 43rd home run, bringing his total for the day to three.

The Twins have now dropped their last six after winning six in a row just over a week ago.
