1961 Games 102 & 103: Minnesota Twins (45-56) @ Baltimore Orioles (58-46)

Twins 4, Orioles 3
Orioles 4, Twins 3

The surging Twins finally lost a game, but not before extending the season-long winning streak to six games in the first game of a double header in Baltimore.

The runs didn’t seem to come as easily for the Twins as they had over the weekend. In fact, the score of the first game was 1-0 in favor of the Orioles after eight innings of play. Oriole starter Chuck Estrada had allowed just a single hit up to that point.

Zoilo Versalles changed that when he singled off of Estrada to start the inning. After Lenny Green and Harmon Killebrew flied out, the Twins really went to work. Bob Allison singled Versalles to third base. After Allison stole second, Estrada walked Joe Altobelli to load the bases with two outs. Hal Naragon launched a double to right field scoring two and giving the Twins a one-run lead. After another walk, Bill Tuttle knocked another two-run double giving the Twins a couple of insurance runs that they ended up needing in the 4-3 win.

The Twins took a 3-2 lead in game two of the twinbill when Ted Lepcio hit a two-run home run (7) in the fourth inning.  Baltimore starter Dick Hall did not come out for the fifth inning, but Hoyt Wilhelm did. He held the Twins scoreless for the last five innings. The O’s took the lead for good when Dave Philley’s pinch-hit single knocked Jim Busby in with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
