1961 Game 80: Los Angeles Angels (32-48) @ Minnesota Twins (33-46)

Wednesday July 5, 1961

Angels 6, Twins 2

Following the doubleheader sweep on July 4, shortstop Zoilo Versalles packed his bags for home. The 21-year-old had been waiting for his wife to arrive from Cuba, but she was unable due to “international compications.” Versalles was fined for his unexcused absence from Wednesday’s game against the Angels, but had a conversation with Calvin Griffith in which the Cuban explained the circumstances. He got on the next available plane to go home to Cuba.

The Twins didn’t put up much fight against the Angels in Versalles absence. Despite carrying a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, the team was handed a 6-2 loss at the hands of the Angels.
