Tuesday July 4, 1961

Twins 6, White Sox 4
Twins 4, White Sox 2

The Twins found themselves trailing 4-1 after six innings in the first game of the July 4 twinbill against the White Sox. The only run for the home team to that point had come on Bill Tuttle’s first home run of the season.

Chicago scored three of their runs at the expense of starter Bert Cueto, who lasted only 3 2/3 innings. They scored two more off of Bill Pleis, who came on in relief.

In the top of the seventh, Jim Lemon cut the lead to two runs with a solo shot (8) off of Billy Pierce. Pierce retired the next seven batters in a row, and looked to have the Twins on the ropes with just two outs between him and a White Sox’ victory.

The Twins were able to load the bases with two outs thanks to a pair of singles and a walk at the expense of three different opposing pitchers. Warren Hacker came on as the fourth pitcher in the inning to face Julio Becquer with the bases loaded and two outs.

Becquer ended the game in dramatic fashion with a grand slam deep to right field. The Twins walked off with a 6-0 win in the first game.

Both teams remained scoreless in game two through 7 1/2 innings. Jack Kralick and Cal McLish held the respective lineups without a score until the bottom of the eighth inning. With Lenny Green at second, Kralick helped his own cause with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Harmon Killebrew with a three-run home run (25), this one of the inside-the-park variety. The Twins had another four-run inning. The Sox were able to score two with four singles in the ninth, but Kralick hung in to complete the game and earn the win.
