Beating Up on the Royals

Game 59: Twins 6 (35-24), Royals 2 (24-36)

It almost feels dirty, but it has been the blueprint for success in Minnesota over the course of the last decade. Beat up on the inferior teams in the AL Central. That means there have been a lot of teams to bully. Almost every season, that list of bullied teams has included the Kansas City Royals.

For the second straight night, the Twins made it look easy and a little boring. This time it was Carl Pavano holding the Royals off balance and Delmon Young defying Target Field’s mandate that balls stay in the park. Joe Mauer went 2-for-4, Jason Kubel went 2-for-3, and so it goes.

WPA Stars of the Game
1. Carl Pavano
2. Joe Mauer
3. Delmon Young

Standings (through Wednesday)
1. Min 35-24, 280-225, –
2. Det 30-28, 257-262, 4.5
3. Chi 25-33, 252-289, 9.5
4. KC 24-36, 258-300, 11.5
5. Cle 22-36, 236-292, 12.5

Detroit was on the losing end of a 15-3 score, so the Twins are now 4.5 games ahead. Its a good thing, too, considering the imbalance of the interleague schedule ahead. While both teams will see the Braves and the Mets, the Twins round their schedule out with the Phillies, Rockies, and Brewers. The Tigers draw last-place Pittsburgh, last-place Arizona, and almost last-place Washington (hopefully they at least will see Strasburg).
