1961 Game 57: Kansas City Athletics (24-29) @ Minnesota Twins (21-35)

Tuesday June 13, 1961

Twins 8, A’2 6

Tom Briere’s headline in the Sporting News expressed the frustration of many: “Twins’ Sluggers Spinning Wheels in Home Run Derby. Briere laid out the following numbers through June 13: after finishing third in AL home runs as the Senators, the Twins are currently being out homered both on the road and at home. At Metropolitan Stadium, the Twins have a total of 33 home runs to the opponents’ 34. On the road, the disparity is 24 to 35, for an overall home run gap of 57-69.

Briere went on to single out Bob Lemon and Earl Battey, who had 38 and 15 home runs respectively in 1960. So far in 1961, the two have totaled just seven home runs, three for Lemon and four for Battey.

No matter, the Twins won a game against Kansas City largely without the long ball. After the A’s had built a 3-0 lead over the first five innings off of Jim Kaat, the Twins struck in the bottom of the sixth. Battey singled and Zolio Versalles doubled to set the table for Billy Martin’s two-run triple. The next batter, Lenny Green, knocked in Martin with a sacrifice fly to tie the score. The Twins took the lead with four runs on four hits in the seventh inning, the biggest of which was probably Bill Tuttle’s double that scored the go-ahead run.

Harmon Killebrew’ 15th home run of the season made the score 8-4 in the eighth inning. The A’s staged a mini-comeback in the ninth, but fell two runs short in the end.
