There is exactly one player in major league history who shares my birthday: June 7, 1978. Donaldo Mendez was born in Venezuela, but, interestingly enough, was originally drafted by the Houston Astros – occupants of the major league city closest to my place of birth.
Mendez was a shortstop who saw limited playing time with the Padres in the early part of this decade. His 13 OPS+ in 147 plate appearances for the 2001 Padres is somewhat remarkable. Even more remarkable is the fact that he found some playing time in 2003.
He didn’t play in the majors after 2003, though he did have a brief stint in the Twins’ organization with the Rochester Red Wings for the latter part of the 2006 season.
