1961 Games 54 & 55: Minnesota Twins (20-33) @ Boston Red Sox (25-27)

Sunday June 11, 1961

Red Sox 8, Twins 2
Twins 10, Red Sox 5

The first game of the Sunday double header was more of what people came to expect from the Twins on this road trip, which now just a day from (finally) being over. The Red Sox hit four home runs, three off of starter Pedro Ramos, en route to an 8-2 win. The Twins only managed a couple of late runs, well after the game was decided.

The second game, however, was a different story. It likely reminded followers of the Twins of the way the team looked in the initial weeks of the season. Down 2-0 after two innings of play, the Twins put together a rare crooked number inning in the third. Pitcher Jack Kralick started with a lead off single, and by the time the final out was recorded, he took the mound with a 5-2 lead. The big hits in the inning were a two-run double by Jim Lemon, and a two-run home run (11) by Bob Allison.

Harmon Killebrew, who knocked in the first Twins’ run with a single, launched a lead 0ff home run (13) in the fifth inning that put the Twins ahead 6-3. The Sox rallied for two more, but the Twins ended in fashion with a four-run ninth inning in which both Killebrew and Allison added one more RBI to their respective totals – they ended with three each.
