1961 Game 51: Minnesota Twins (19-31) @ New York Yankees (28-19)

Wednesday June 7, 1961

Yankees 5, Twins 1

In a rare occurrence the Twins actually took a lead early in the series finale at Yankee Stadium. Billy Martin tripled with one out, and was knocked in on a Lenny Green double. Just like that the Twins had a lead over Ralph Terry.

For a moment, it looked as though Pedro Ramos might just take that lead and go with it. The only baserunner he allowed in the first two innings reached on an error. It wasn’t long, however, before the powerful Yankee lineup got to Ramos. Roger Maris (17) and Yogi Berra (9) both homered in the half-inning, the former with two men on, the latter with one. The two swings accounted for the entirety of the Yankee offense, but it was more than enough to beat the hapless Twins, who were held hitless after the first inning.
