1961 Game 50: Minnesota Twins (19-30) @ New York Yankees (27-19)

Tuesday June 6, 1961

Yankees 7, Twins 2

Prior to the game, it was announced the manager Cookie Lavagetto would take a leave of absence from the team. With his team in the midst of an epic slump, Calvin Griffith made the decision to give Lavagetto a break. It was made clear that he was still the manager of the team, but he would not return to day-to-day managing duties until June 13. Griffith hoped that time away would help Lavagetto to clear his head and refocus. Sam Mele was interim manager in Lavagetto’s absence. Under Mele, however, it was more of the same for the Twins.

Roger Maris hit his 16th home run of the season  in the sixth inning. It was a three-run shot, and it made the score 6-0 in favor of the Yankees. The shot came off of Ed Palmquist, who came on to start the inning in relief of Jack Kralick, who allowed the first three runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.

Whitey Ford held the Twins in check until the seventh inning, when Jim Lemon singled home Ron Henry and Billy Gardner to put the Twins on the board. It was too little, too late, however and the Twins have now dropped 12 in a row.
