1961 Games 46 & 47: Minnesota Twins (19-26) @ Detroit Tigers (31-16)

Sunday June 4, 1961

Tigers 10, Twins 4
Tigers 9, Twins 3

A good baseball team will attempt to jump on a bad baseball team early in the game, the hope is that an early lead will be insurmountable. The Tigers followed the blueprint perfectly twice in one day in a double header sweep of the badly slumping Twins.

In the first game, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead over the Twins with a run in each of the first two innings. The highlight was Norm Cash’s solo home run off of Camilo Pascual in the second inning. After Cash led off with his blast, the Tigers loaded the bases again, but Pascual escaped without allowing another run.

The Twins cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, but the Tigers answered with two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and five in the eighth inning. In all, the Tigers hit five home runs, three of which came in the eighth inning. Pascual allowed two, while reliever Ed Palmquist surrendered three in one inning.

The second game was more of the same, but this time the Tigers used two three-run home runs (one in the first off the bat of Rocky Colavito and one in the second by Bubba Morton) to take a commanding 6-1 lead after two innings of play. The Twins came as close as three runs down, but the Tigers three more runs in the eighth to win the game 9-3.

In all, the Tigers hit eight home runs in the double header. The Twins have now lost nine in a row and 14 of their last 15 games. It won’t get any easier now with the team headed to New York for four games in three days against the Yankees.
