1961 Game 45: Minnesota Twins (19-25) @ Detroit Tigers (30-16)

Saturday June 3, 1961

Tigers 2, Twins 1

Billy Martin and Bill Tuttle had been with the Twins just for a single game before the controversy began. Among the players sent to Kansas City in the package for Tuttle was Paul Giel. Giel announced his retirement the day after the trade was official, prompting A’s owner Charlie Finley to request more compensation.

“We feel as if we’ve been fleeced in this transaction,” said Finley. He requested $50,000 from the Twins. Giel had reportedly told Finley that he had announced his intentions to at least one Twins official prior to the trade. Calvin Griffith challenged Finley to read the rule book and asserted that the Twins had no obligations to the A’s.

While the bickering went on off the field, the new players didn’t exactly help the Twins on the field. Don Mossi allowed just one run on seven hits to improve his season record to 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA. The Twins got a few hits off of Mossi, but all were singles, and they weren’t able to score until the top of the ninth when Bob Allison singled home Tuttle.

Pedro Ramos pitched well for the Twins, but allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth that earned him the loss. The Tigers added what turned out to be an important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
