Close, But No Sweep

Game 19: Royals 4 (7-11), Twins 3 (13-6)

Sunday’s game probably served to further a couple of the dominant narratives of the 2010 season so far. The first is that the Twins are shooting themselves in the foot by missing opportunities with men on base – evidenced by the fact that the team stranded another 12 on Sunday including a couple of more bases loaded opportunities. The other storyline is a failure to sweep teams, up 2-0 in the last three series only to lose on get away day.

Neither of these should be of much concern, however, when a team is 13-6. Sunday’s performance was disappointing, but in the end there was a bat in Jim Thome’s hand representing the go-ahead run that would have completed the three-game sweep. I’ll take my chances with that scenario every time.

WPA Stars of the Game
1. Justin Morneau
2. Dustin Hughes
3. Yuniesky Betancourt

AL Central Standings (through Sunday)
1. Min 13-6, 101-70, –
2. Det 10-9, 88-93, 3.0
3. Cle 8-10, 60-81, 4.5
4. Chi 8-11, 74-90, 5.0
5. KC 7-11, 85-106, 5.5

What is frustrating is that there is another day off following a loss. Things get back on track Tuesday night, however, with the Liriano vs. Verlander pitching matchup in Detroit.

every time? WPA states the Twins are favored to lose in that situation. Unless, of course, if you mean winning 2 out of 3 games and then having Thome up with a chance to win game three…then yes, I’ll take that.

That’s what I’m talking about – one plate appearance away from a sweep. Every time.
