1961 Game 12: Minnesota Twins (8-3) @ Los Angeles Angels (1-7)

Thursday April 27, 1961

The Twins not only opened Metropolitan Stadium for business in 1961, they also played the first ever American League Game on the West Coast. The Angels hosted their first game at Wrigley Field in front of a disappointing crowd of just over 11,000.

After his team allowed 20 runs in the last game, Camilo Pascual gave the Twins a good pitching performance. The Angels scored first when, in the second inning, Earl Averill hit a two-run homer off of Pascual. The Twins’ pitcher did not allow another run after.

His team didn’t take the lead until the sixth inning. A Don Mincher sacrifice fly scored the first Twins’ run in the fourth, cutting the Los Angeles lead in half. With Mincher and Jim Lemon on thanks to sixth inning singles, Earl Battey hit the shot of the game – a three-run home run that put the Twins ahead 4-2, which also turned out to be the final score.

Pascual ran into some trouble when he allowed a pair of singles in the eighth, but Ray Moore came in and shut down the Angels to secure the ninth win of the Twins’ inaugural season. Thanks to a Detroit loss, the Twins also crept into first place in the American League.
