1961 Game 10: Minnesota Twins (7-2) @ Kansas City Athletics (2-4)

Monday April 24, 1961

The Twins entered the ninth inning down by three runs. After Dan Dobbek led off the inning by striking out, the A’s had a 99% chance of winning the game (based on WPA). The Twins, however, defied the odds. Earl Battey started a rally with a single off of Ed Rakow. Reno Bertoia followed with the same. New pitcher Bud Dailey then issued a walk to Billy Gardner to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Ron Henry grounded out to first, scoring Battey from third base, but hitting into the all-important second out of the inning (still 88% WPA). Zoilo Versalles singled home the second run of the inning for the Twins (84%), but the biggest play came on an error charged to Dick Howser when he muffed a grounder off the bat of Lenny Green, allowing the tying run to score (52%).

The A’s made it out of the ninth with no further damage done, but another error started the game-winning rally for the Twins in the 10th – this time charged to second baseman Jerry Lumpe to allow Don Mincher to reach to open the 10th inning. Another error in the inning allowed Earl Battey to knock in three unearned runs with a bases-clearing double on the way to a 10-6 Twins win.
