1961 Game 4 & 5: Minnesota Twins (2-1) @ Baltimore Orioles (1-2)

Sunday April 16, 1961

Game 4: Twins 10, Orioles 5

For the past two season, Bob Allison’s uniform was number 26. In the spring of 1961, Allison went with the number 4 after a failed attempt to buy the number 10 from catcher Earl Battey. When asked about the change, Allison simply said that the number 26 was too heavy to carry.

So far, Allison is having success with his new number. He had one of the best games of his career against the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader. Allison hit a first inning grand slam, then added a three-run home run in the sixth. In all he knocked in seven runs in the Twins 10-5 victory over the O’s.

Starting pitcher Pedro Ramos, who earned the win despite running into trouble later in the game, suggested that if Allison continues to help him like he did in his first two starts, he will win 20 games.

Game 5: Twins 6, Orioles 4 (11 innings)

Zoilo Versalles’ hot start to the season continued with a game-winning home run in the second game of the twin bill. He was 4-for-6 in the game. Don Mincher, the man who will be charged with replacing Harmon Killebrew during the slugger’s stint on the disabled list, hit his first home run of the season and knocked in two.
