1961 Game 2: Minnesota Twins (1-0) @ Baltimore Orioles (0-1)

Friday April 14, 1961

There was some concern coming into the season that Camilo Pascual might have some trouble making it through an entire season. He had been bothered by shoulder problems in 1960. Pascual attempted to answer those questions in his first start of the 1961 season.

Pascual’s Baltimore counterpart, Jack Fisher, also pitched well. The pitchers exchanged zeros until the fourth inning when Zoilo Versalles led off with a double. He eventually scored the game’s first run when O’s first baseman Jim Gentile mishandled a fielding opportunity off the bat of Jim Lemon.

The Orioles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Jackie Brandt cracked a two-run triple off of Pascual. The Twins’ pitcher did not allow another run after.

The Twins tied the score in the top of the sixth, then took the lead for good when Versalles knocked in Billy Gardner with a single in the seventh. The final score was 3-2.

Pascual was pleased with his five-hit performance:

“I go nine with no arm trouble,” he said. “I was never concerned about my condition, ability to go nine, or last year’s shoulder trouble. I’m getting enough work now so my curve and control are better after winter vacation.”

Some around baseball had been concerned about the weather in Minnesota, particularly in the early spring. This year, weather has been a problem for all teams. The entire slate of games for Thursday April 13th was cancelled due to weather, and the Twins haven’t even had a home game scheduled yet.
