With Joe Nathan likely out for the season, I took the liberty of drafting a job post for the Twins’ website.
Job Title: Closer*
*This is a temporary position, available only for the 2010 baseball season.
Salary Range: DOQ
Hours: Report to the bullpen in the 4th inning. Pitch no more than one inning per game.
The Twins are seeking a pitcher to record final three outs of wins. Successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to get batters out with minimal trouble. Must work well with catchers, enjoy traveling and the outdoors.
-Ability to perform in pressure situations
-Intimidating stare that terrifies hitters a plus
Internal applicants encouraged. Send resume to R. Gardenhire.
In all seriousness I think that losing Nathan is a blow for the Twins, but if I were to choose a position to lose a top player closer would be pretty high on the list. This team seems to have a lot of options in the bullpen to fill the position in-house, and the Twins have a pretty good recent history of finding the right guy to close out the game. I would be much more worried if a position player went down for the season.
That said, hopefully Mr. Nathan will be back and ready go for 2011.
