1978 & 1985: Ron Guidry Owns the Twins

On July 20, 1978 Ron Guidry won his 14th game by shutting out the Minnesota Twins at Metropolitan Stadium. Though Guidry’s dominance over the American League was a major storyline that year, his performance against the Twins on that day was not particularly interesting. He allowed just four hits, struck out eight and walked three (including two strikeouts and a walk issued to one of my favorite players, Bombo Rivera). It was just one of Guidry’s 25 wins that season, including nine shutouts.

Eight years to the day later, Guidry had the Twins’ number again. This time the game was held in the Metrodome. He went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Interestingly, all three of the strikeouts belonged to Gary Gaetti. It was only Guidry’s 13th win that season, on his way to winning 22 – the second highest total of his career.

In 1978, the shutout of the Twins was Guidry’s 30th career victory. Eight years later, it was Guidry’s 145th win.
