2006 Playoffs Redux: ALDS Game 1

Ed. – For better or worse 2006 was one of the most memorable seasons in Twins history. Part of the frustration from that season were the “what ifs” it presented, particularly the big one: what if Francisco Liriano had remained healthy through the entire season and playoffs? Over the next few weeks, I am going to replay the 2006 playoffs using Diamond Mind software. The only change will be that Francisco Liriano will be available for the Twins, replacing Glen Perkins on the 25-man roster. I’m only playing through once and assuming that all of the other series from that year end with identical outcomes to the real thing. First up: the ALDS against the Oakland A’s.

Twins Pour it on in the Late Innings, Take Game 1

Game 1 started as advertised, a pitcher’s duel between two of the best left-handed pitchers in the league: Johan Santana and Barry Zito. The two exchanged zeroes through the first four innings of the game. Each pitcher allowed just two hits and a walk over the first four frames.

The scoring began in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Swisher led off with a single to right, and was pushed to second when Mark Ellis drew a one-out walk. The next batter, Jason Kendall, grounded a single through the hole on the left side of the infield to score Swisher from second and put the A’s ahead 1-0. Santana got Mark Kotsay to fly out for the second out of the inning, but Milton Bradley came throught with a two-out single to put the A’s ahead by two.

Zito pitched around a Rondell White double in the home half of the fifth, but the Twins finally got to the Oakland lefty with two out in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Mauer worked the count full with two outs and fouled three consecutive pitches away before taking ball four. With a man on, Michael Cuddyer snuck a double down the third base line moving Mauer to third. After taking a called strike, Justin Morneau launched a long ball over the baggy to put the Twins ahead 3-2.

After Juan Rincon struck out the side in relief of Santana in the top of the seventh, the Twins added some insurance in after the stretch.  Phil Nevin drew a four-pitch walk from Zito with one out, followed by a groundball single off the bat of Jason Bartlett. Luis Castillo followed with another single to load the bases, still with only one out. Nick Punto followed with a single that scored both Nevin and the speedy Bartlett. Zito’s game was over after 6 1/3 innings, he left trailing 5-2.

The Twins added one more run when Torii Hunter scored from second on Rondell White’s single. The bullpen combo of Rincon and Nathan held the A’s scoreless for the remainder of the game to close out Game 1.
