1975: Kusick ties a major league record

August 27, 1975

Bert Blyleven allowed just six hits over the course of 11 innings, and finally got the Twins a 1-0 win over the Brewers when Tony Oliva singled home Steve Brye in the top of the 11th.

The real story of the game, however, might have been how Brye came to enter the game as a pinch-runner earlier in that same inning. With one out, Bill Travers hit Craig Kusick with a pitch. It was the third time in the game that Kusick had been hit. Kusick was also hit in the second and the sixth inning.

The most recent instance of a player getting hit three times in the same game happened in the 2000 season when Craig Biggio was the victim.

Interestingly, Bert Blyleven’s name is among those on the list of pitchers who have hit three batters in one inning. Blyleven did so in the second inning of a late-season game in 1988.
