The Twins select outfielder Kirby Puckett out of Triton College with the third overall pick in the January amateur draft. The Blue Jays chose an outfielder named Kash Beachamp with the first overall pick, while the Cubs took catcher Troy Afenir second. Beauchamp never made it higher than AAA, while Afenir played in a total of 35 major league games spread out over five years with three different teams.
In the 1982 June draft, the Twins chose Allan Anderson (1st round, 32 overall), Mark Davidson (11, 266), and Lenny Webster (16, 395).
