Game 1 @ Met Stadium
Harmon Killebrew and Jimmie Hall each hit a solo home run off of Johan Santana in a 4-2 win for the 1965 team. Killer’s came in the bottom of the seventh and broke a 2-2 tie, while Hall’s served as an insurance run in the eighth. Johnny Klippenstein earned the victory in relief of Jim Kaat, and Al Worthington pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the save. 1965 Twins lead 1-0.

Game 2 @ Met Stadium
Brad Radke allowed ten hits in 7 1/3 innings pitched, but only one of those was for extra bases (a bases-empty double to Killebrew in the bottom of the sixth). Radke pitched seven scoreless innings, and had a 4-0 lead before he finally ran into trouble in the eighth. A couple of singles and a passed ball brought Killebrew to the plate with men on second and third and just one out. Computer Gardenhire chose to pitch to Harmon (rather than facing Allison with the bases loaded), and he laced a single to left to score two runs. Joe Nathan came in to get the final two outs of the inning, and held the 1965 Twins scoreless for the save in a 5-3 victory for the 2006 team. Luis Castillo went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored in the victory. Series tied 1-1.

Game 3 @ Metrodome
Francisco Liriano and Camilo Pascual engaged in a pitching duel for seven innings. Each allowed just one run in the second. The 1965 Twins scored first when Killebrew crossed the plate on a Don Mincher ground out; Bob Allison’s double put Killebrew on third. The 2006 Twins evened the score when Jason Kubel found the hole between first and second to score Cuddyer. Neither pitcher allowed another run until the final inning. Liriano went seven and allowed just two hits and the one run. Pascual pitched eight innings, and was charged with the game winner in the bottom of the ninth. After he walked Torii Hunter to start the inning, the hero of the previous series, Luis Rodriguez, singled Hunter to second. Jason Tyner, who entered the game for an injured Rondell White, singled to load the bases. With Jason Bartlett at the plate, the passed ball bug hit Earl Battey, who let one get by him to score the game-winning run. 2006 Twins lead 2-1.

Game 4 @ Metrodome
The 1965 Twins jumped on Carlos Silva early and never looked back in their effort to even the series. Zoilo Versalles and Harmon Killebrew each homered in a five-run third inning for the 1965 Twins, who went on to win the game 7-4. Jim Kaat pitched seven innings to earn the victory, while Killebrew knocked in three runs to bring hit RBI total for the series to seven. Series tied 2-2.

Game 5 @ Metrodome
This time the pitcher’s duel was between Johan Santana and Mudcat Grant. The two of them pitched their teams into the ninth inning tied at one. In the top of the ninth, the 1965 Twins loaded the bases with three singles off of Juan Rincon. Dennys Reyes came on and forced Tony Oliva to ground out, but Earl Battey scored from third on the play. The run turned out to be all the 1965 team needed. Al Worthington earned his third save of the series with a perfect ninth in the 2-1 win. 1965 Twins lead 3-2.

Game 6 @ Met Stadium
The 2006 Twins had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Torii Hunter had been the offensive star up to that point, with a home run and a triple off of Jim Perry. A Harmon Killebrew home run in the bottom of the seventh off of Brad Radke halved the lead, but the 2006 Twins answered with a run in the eighth. Zoilo Versalles’ two-run home run off of Brad Radke in the eighth ended Radke’s outing and tied the game heading into the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Bob Allison took a Juan Rincon pitch out of the park for the game-winning, two-run home run to clinch the series for the 1965 Twins. 1965 Twins win the series 4-2.

Raw Data

I simulated this series 100 times, and the 1965 Twins won 60 times even. The most common outcome was a seven-game win for the 1965 Twins (25 times), but they also won a number of series in five games (17). That, combined with the overall series win record (1965 Twins won 317 games to 276 for last year’s team), made this more of a six-game win than a seven-game win.

  1. Beau says:

How did Liriano generally do? Was he usually the Game 3 and Game 7 starter?

  2. Scot says:

I didn’t look too closely (and didn’t save all 100 series, a decision that I am kicking myself for), but generally Liriano was the best pitcher on the 2006 Twins. The times they lost his starts usually fell on the bullpen (he typically went 6-7 innings) or lack of run support.

I had the rotation set at Santana, Radke, Liriano, Silva, so 3 and 7 would have been Liriano starts.
