Weekend News

Kirby Puckett Update

The Star Tribune posted this update earlier this morning.

Big Ten Wrestling Champions

The Gopher wrestling team took care of business at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships over the weekend in Bloomington, Indiana.

The team took four individual titles on its way to the team title. Both of the Schlatter brothers won individual titles, defeating another pair of brothers (the Tirapelles from Illinois). Roger Kish and Cole Konrad were the other two individual champions. In addition, the Gophers qualified eight wrestlers for the NCAA Championships March 16-18.

It would be nice to be able to comment on the individual matches, or the tournament as a whole, but I am unable to. College wrestling is a difficult sport to follow. Unlike baseball, in which almost every game is on television and every game is on the radio, wrestling is a bit harder to find. The Gopher’s victory in Bloomington was not broadcast live anywhere, and will only be seen on tape Monday night on CSTV (which is a second tier cable channel – not available at my house).

If it weren’t for the internet, the only avalailable results would have come from the morning paper. As it was, I was able to check back in with the Gophers wrestling site for updates throughout the weekend.

In two weeks, the Gophers will attempt to win the National Championship in Oklahoma. ESPN usually covers the finals, sometimes live, but in order to follow the rest of the tournament it’s back to the internet.
